It's Not You

By Regina Murphy

Synopsis: When we feel rejected, Jesus is also being rejected.

When thinking about work, I sometimes asked the Lord, what is my purpose there? This last year a young co-worker and I spent many hours side by side. I learned that she grew up in church and knowing the Lord. Her life recently did not reflect that and she had a few regrets. It was a pleasure to get to know her and share about our loving God who forgives all and washes away shame.

Then something happened. She started to distance herself. She went to another state to visit family and when she came back, decided to move there in the fall. The distance she created was hurtful to me and I noticed my thoughts toward her were taking the shape of a wall. A brick one.

Then the Holy Spirit spoke: It’s not you she is rejecting, it is Christ within you. Oh, how sad this made me. Relieved to realize it is not me, but sad to know that her trust and faith in God to transform her life is so small. Or worse, that she is not done testing her wings in this world. I’ve been there--tested my wings in the worldly world. I want to scream…IT”S NOT WORTH IT—YOUR WASTING YOUR TIME—GOD HAS A BETTER PLAN! A young, beautiful girl at risk for creating pain in her life with the choices she makes. It makes me want to hold my baby girl and never let her out of my sight. (My teen would say that is exactly what I will do.)

It also makes me want to grab her by the shoulders and stop her from self destruction. But before I do that, I need to get a grip and tell myself, God is bigger than my friend. He is bigger than me and all the choices she could make.

Deuteronomy 1:30-33 (New International Version)

30 The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, 31 and in the desert. There you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place." 32 In spite of this, you did not trust in the LORD your God, 33who went ahead of you on your journey, in fire by night and in a cloud by day, to search out places for you to camp and to show you the way you should go.

As my friend searches for herself and her place in life, I will pray that at every turn, she will find the Lord.
