A Tapestry

By Carol Ilbery

I recently ran across a story about a mother and child. The mother did embroidery work while the child would sit on the floor and watch. Mom wouldn’t let the child see the top until she was done, which was frustrating to the child. All she could see was the bottom of the material, which looked like a bunch of jumbled, knotted mess. Finally, she was able to crawl up into her mother’s lap and see the finished product. The child was always amazed at how neat the top looked when the bottom was such a mess.

My life over the past few weeks has seemed like the jumbled mess on the back of the embroidery work with the basement flooding, money issues, winter colds, and other various issues of life. I would find myself asking God about it—more about the basement—and the ever-present “why”?

Then, a couple of weeks ago, in Bible study, we came to I Corinthians 14:33, “For God is not a God of disorder, but of peace.”

The knowledge that, if God is not a God of disorder, he must be one of order, was a great relief. Hence, this chaos in my life isn’t really chaos, but threads being placed strategically on this piece of material called life. I don’t know the purpose or outcome and, because of the peace God has granted, it doesn’t seem as important to know the “whys or hows” as it once did. One day, I’ll see the tapestry of my life and it will make sense…

But then, when I get to see it, it won’t be important then, either.
