Memory Lane with Mom

By Carol Blansett

I ran across the name ‘Flora’ today. Again. Whether it’s a street name or a lady’s name or alluding to flowers, that word looks different to me. It’s a very special name. You see, it’s my mother’s name: Flora. It just sits there and radiates “‘Special.’’’

Of course, I didn’t call her Flora, I called her ‘Mama’ as a child and ‘Mom’ as an adult, but I love her name, as it’s a name that means ‘My Mother.’ Meek and mild, sweet, shy, cute ~ it’s my mother. Her parents named her Flora Florine but she changed her middle name to ‘Lorene.’ I think often of that young girl growing up, then young lady, making decisions, then matron, a wife, a mother, and think about her, wondering what she was like at each stage of life.

Mom was ill in her latter years and not much about remembering or sharing thoughts even when prompted. I bought a book for grandparents to share their earlier memories to fill out with her help, but it remains only partially finished.

Mother will be in heaven for a year pretty soon. She passed on at ten weeks shy of 89 years. With Mother’s Day on the horizon, Memorial Day coming, the June date of her passing, and then her birthday, all close in a row, she is never far from my memory.

God showed Himself faithful to Mom. He took care of her every need with every kind of doctor, dentist, neurologist, Meals On Wheels, family, caregiver, and what-zit she needed. He has increased my faith in looking at her life and how He was there to provide for her. He cares for the birds of the air and for his doves that are sick.

Thank you for joining me on my walk down memory lane with my mom, Flora. I hope you will be encouraged in the Blessed Hope we have in our future in eternity with Jesus in Heaven if we have trusted in His atonement for our sin by dying on the cross, spilling His precious blood for us!

“Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in me,” Jesus invites us. John 14:1 KJV

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27 KVJ

Come to the living waters, you thirsty ones!
